If you are just starting out new in a school, getting acquainted with your school principal and your other colleagues should be top in your priorities. Every school develops its own culture depending on the attitude of the head of the institution. So getting to know the principal will give you some idea about the philosophies which help him or her run the school. If you have developed a plan of studies for your music lessons, you could share the information with him. You might impress him with your structured thinking and organizational skills. Then meeting your colleagues also makes sense. You can get more familiar with your work environment by meeting those who have been with the institution for long. You can even get valuable insights which can help you in your future years. 

Getting to know your pupils should be next in your agenda. Learn the names of the members of the school choir, if any, the experience of senior students and get the message across that yu are a disciplined music teacher and expect your students to follow some norms of discipline too. You could talk less and straightaway get into your music lessons. If you are an instrumental music teacher, ask your students to play a piece – so that you can assess their strengths and weaknesses. If they are forgetful, you might have to brush up their fundamentals of key signatures or basic phrase markings. Whichever level you might have started – elementary, junior high, or high school, always remember that there will be trying moments, much like any other teacher. It could well be possible that you need to brush up your own skills and proficiency level to meet the fresh demands of the situation.
